Here is a short idea of what I do for a living

Development of instruments, software and methods for the determination of macromolecular structure through X-ray crystallography.

Research

Experiments should be designed in order to minimize and if possible eradicate sources of systematic error in the data. In the very worst case, if a source of error cannot be eradicate then it should be quantified so that it can be removed during data analysis. My research aims to develop hardware and software to facilitate this experimetnal goal. Two developments listed below are specifically aimed at providing diagnostic information about the condition of the monochromatic X-ray beam (beam position and photon energy) in order to aid automation of beamline instrumentation and remove these possible sources of systematic error. Current software development projects are looking at removing the effects of X-ray absorption from diffraction data and dealing correctly with measurement errors more generally in diffraction data.

  • Instrumentation
    • X-ray energy stabilization
    • Beam position monitoring
    • In-house low resolution diffraction data measurement
  • Software

I am currrently based at the Diamond Light Source where I am responsible for the design, construction and operation of the I24 microfocus beamline for macromolecular crystallography.
